Nurses are the primary backbone and greatest population in the healthcare system. Burnout in the nursing profession appears to be a serious concern. Majority of the nurses suffer the same issues, including massive burnout, workplace pressure, a heavy workload, and a work-life imbalance. The Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model is a prominent tool for analysing burnout. The JD-R model provides a theoretical framework for understanding the associations between job demands, job resources, and burnout, but its application in the context of Malaysian nursing is relatively unknown. The purpose of this paper is to investigate nurses’ working circumstances using the well-recognized and well-established JD-R theory to assess nurse burnout. The JD-R model illustrates how job demands drain individuals via impairment, while job resources promote engagement through motivation. Nurses are always under time pressure and dealing with a heavy workload. Workload is the leading source of stress among nurses, including general hospital nurses, surgical nurses, and acute care nurses. Nurses must perform several responsibilities daily, which may be stressful when there is little time to offer patient care. Nurses have inconsistent schedules, making it difficult for them to create a consistent pattern in their personal and family lives. Nurses face several work-related responsibilities, yet they are given restricted resources. Nurses also require autonomy and feedback on the job. Job autonomy has a major influence on employee burnout and job stress, but feedback improves the clinical performance of government professionals. Thus, the purpose of this conceptual paper is to create a model that describes how job demands and job resources influence nurses’ burnout.
