Abstract

The study looked at the experience of students in using physical acting tools (PAT) to develop their acting references. Acting references are a common and useful part of the character animation workflow. Typical animation courses in higher education tend to emphasise mainly on theoretical studies, whilst keeping acting knowledge or practical use of acting skills as a secondary source for references. This has led to low body awareness, thus very poorly executed acting references. PAT has been considered an effective way of teaching new actors, or those without acting background, to develop awareness of the body and its movement. The study identified two research problem statements and looked to literature to address the issue. Based on the literature review and expert recommendation, the researcher developed a PAT workshop in which 30 Animation and Visual Effects 3 undergraduate students, majoring in Animation and Visual Effects, participated in.
