Li, Ee Hui (2016) Learning of Chinese Idioms through Multimedia Storytelling. Masters thesis, Multimedia University. Full text not available from this repository.Abstract
Chinese idiom was part and parcel of the Chinese language and contributed in Chinese vocabulary learning. It was usually formed by four Chinese characters and commonly used in Chinese communication. The learning of Chinese idiom enabled the learners to study its precious meaning, as well as to understand the Chinese history, cultural traits and moral values better. However, the using of traditional teaching and learning method in the Chinese language classes has caused the learners to become passive and less motivated. In addition, the Chinese language teachers usually imparted the contents of Chinese idioms to the learners concisely and directly as they still had to cover other syllabus within the given period for a lesson. Hence, the learners were less likely to fully understand the derivation of Chinese idiom, especially its backstory in detail during the class. Apart from that, the existing Chinese idiom learning mechanisms were found unsuitable for the non-native speakers. In order to solve these issues, a multimedia storytelling prototype (MSP) was designed and developed purposely for the non-native speakers to study Chinese idioms in this research. In order to test and evaluate the feasibility of the multimedia storytelling prototype (MSP), an experiment was carried out to determine its learning effectiveness in supplementing the traditional teaching and learning method. The learners who attended the Chinese as foreign language classes had been assigned to experimental group and conventional teaching group. A Chinese idiom test and survey questionnaires were given to the participants from both groups after the Chinese idiom lesson.
