Abstract

This thesis proposes the use of QR code as a medium to store 3D model information and textures. This will make the AR system independent of storage and internet connection. Hence, this system is called the Resource Independent Marker based Augmented Reality (RIMBAR). Different models formats are tested to find out the optimal format for 3D model and texture storage. Currently available text compression algorithms are then applied to test its effectiveness in reducing the size of the data. An exploitable redundancy test is carried out to find out the patterns of exploitable redundancy that can be used to shrink the data further. Based on the findings of the exploitable redundancy test, multiple compression methods are applied to the texts to provide better text compression compared to the current algorithms. The combination of this compression method is called the RIMBAR algorithm and RIMBAR 2 Algorithm. For information that still would not fit, it is split to multiple QR codes. A new way to detect multiple QR codes in the AR environment is created to support the tracking of multiple QR codes for Augmented Reality.
