Abstract

eXtensible Markup Language (XML) has become the de facto standard for data exchange over the Internet in many web applications especially in most business transactions. However, these application data are subject to frequent changes. As such, it is essential to support not only queries but dynamic updates (insert, update and delete operations) over XML content. Labeling schemes are one of the well known query optimization techniques as they provide a quick way to determine the type of relationships which present among the nodes. In this paper, we discuss some selected labeling scheme based on some classification. We also highlight the current trends of XML labeling especially in terms of the support for dynamic updates.
