ONE of the key components in determining the success of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) is the establishment of a "first-grade" multimedia university - an institution that is recognised as one of the best universities in the world for networking and computing. The university is needed to train professionals who will really understand the business, and provide the necessary personnel required for businesses operating in the corridor. As people with the right computer science skill sets are in short supply and in very high demand, the MSC must be able to create its own labour pool. According to Novell's executive vice president and chief technology officer Glenn Ricart, in addition to being the key component of the MSC, a multimedia university is also one of the most difficult to pull off well. "After spending 13 years in higher education myself, I hope that you do a right job of that because it is very much needed. Worldwide, we do not have enough people graduating to satisfy.
