Abstract

Present at the Co-operation Agreement signing ceremony were MM president, Professor Dr Ghauth Jasmon and David J Marinelli, president of Lucent Technologies Malaysia Sdn Bhd. At the ceremony, Lucent also presented a cheque of US$13,000 to the Dengkil Smart School project. Narayanan Kanan, senior vice president of the Regulatory Department at the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC), received the cheque from Lucent. Both ceremonies were witnessed by YB Datuk Amar Leo Moggie, Malaysia's Minister of Energy, Communications and Multimedia. Under this Bell Labs Visiting Professorship Programme, Lucent will continue to provide the MMU with visiting professors from its world-renowned research and development arm, Bell Laboratories, for another year, beginning October 1999. These professors will deliver university level courses in three areas: Wireless Communications, Internet and Data Networking and Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) microelectronics. These courses will be delivered over three semesters, beginning in October 1999 and ending in September 2000. Supplementary short course offerings and seminars will also be conducted for both students and the general public. "The extension of this programme underlines our successfu collaboration with Lucent. Since September 1998, over 226 students at the MMU have benefited from the Bell Labs Visiting Professorship programme," said Professor Dr Ghauth Jasmon. "Today's announcemen demonstrates the MMU's and Lucent's commitment to bring the best in world class research and development to Malaysia." In addition to the academic co-operation, Lucent's contribution of US$13,000 t the Dengkil Smart School project marks the company's commitment to nurture young talents and build their skills in information technology (IT).
