Abstract

The study was motivated by the desire to ascertain the progress Malaysia has made in achieving Millennium Development Goal 3 in ensuring participation of women in economic decision making processes. This includes ensuring women have equal opportunity to achieve top management positions in organizations. The dateline set for the goal is 2015. The purpose of the study is to determine the barriers in women managers’ career progression in Malaysian GLCs and the path by which family related barriers, negative stereotype, glass ceiling, and talent management influence women managers’ career progression. A quantitative research approach in the form of a correlation study was used in this research. A total of 466 women managers from 17 GLCs constituted the sample. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The result show that personal variables such as age, job level, marital status, number of children and highest education qualifications significantly influenced women managers’ career progression.
