Abstract

The title of the thesis is ‘The Effect of Workplace Environment on Employees Productivity and Wellbeing’. The study examines 3 key factors of the workplace environment which are the physical aspect of the workplace environment, such as the office layout, noise levels, lighting, etc., the social aspect of the workplace environment such as workplace interrelations, work ethics, etc., and finally the health aspect of the workplace environment such as implementation of healthy practices and supportive policies. These key elements will be implemented based on theories such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need to better understand employee’s needs. The research objective is to identify challenges/issues pertaining workplace environment that effects employee productivity and wellbeing and to find possible solutions to what can be improved in a workplace environment to help boost employee’s productivity and wellbeing. The research uses qualitative method, and a semi-structured interview is conducted with 10 participants to gather primary data. Thematic analysis revealed 9 main issues related to the three workplace factors, such as lack of privacy, poor management, inequality, stress, etc. Participants also provided suggestions for possible solutions, which were discussed and supported with relevant literature. The study concludes with addressing the importance of HR management in a workplace environment to mitigate the main issues discussed in this study. The gap of the literature is explored by focusing on the service sector of small office-based companies in Selangor, Malaysia. This is to provide relevant results on how to further enhance the workplace environment and to understand employees’ needs in a workplace, ultimately leading to better workplace design and management practices.
