Abstract

Since the pandemic hit companies globally and severely affected its profitability, the long-established business model and conventional way of doing more-for-more is proving to be not sustainable. The telecommunications industry is no exception as most telco companies, now in its transformative phase are facing major budget cut for capital expenditure and instead, places strong emphasis on cost optimisation and innovation. The logical approach to sustain growth and increase profit margin is to do more with less, as the pandemic has forcefully taught the telecommunication industry, to meet the surge of data demand and investment for resilient network. This paper seeks to contribute in implementing sustainable practices leading to zero-wastage, better network optimisation, and cost savings while contributing to the change in corporate culture to be more frugal. This paper will develop a theoretical framework based on the concept of Frugal Innovation, in where the approach to innovation emphasizes in doing more with less. With the potential of substantial cost savings, frugal innovation is revolutionizing the way we do business and reshaping management thinking. The methodology of this study is interpretivism research paradigm, particularly using case study strategy in one of Malaysia’s telco. In facilitating this process, a semi-structured interview-based qualitative data collection technique is deployed to investigate the phenomena, offer a framework to manage, and offer the improvised process. The impact of this study is aimed in achieving high cost optimisation and better cost management, as a result of proper cable management. The intervention introduced in improvising the verification process is expected to sweat the current network’s assets to produce better profit margins for the telco company in the ever dynamic telecommunications industry. Consequently, this paper will contribute towards achieving one of Malaysia’s Sustainability Development Goal (SDG) to Build Resilient Infrastructure, Promote Inclusive and Sustainable Industrialization, and Foster Innovation.
