Abstract

The adoption of multiple-deep rack configurations, particularly double-deep racks, in automated warehouses has gained considerable research due to their efficiency in maximizing storage density and floor space utilization. Automated warehouses employ advanced technologies such as automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and stacker cranes, minimizing human intervention. While existing reviews have explored emerging trends in automated warehouses, there remains a gap in literature specifically addressing research needs for warehouses utilizing multiple-deep rack configurations. This systematic literature review analyses fifty English-language research publications spanning from 2014 to 2024, focusing exclusively on the application of multiple-deep racks in automated warehousing systems. The review underscores the critical importance of integrating multiple-deep rack systems to enhance warehouse efficiency and productivity. The discussion section provides a comprehensive examination of optimization strategies and storage allocation methods employed in these systems. Furthermore, the review identifies key success factors essential for the effective implementation and operation of multiple-deep rack configurations in automated warehouses. These insights not only inform future research directions but also offer practical implications for enhancing performance and scalability in automated warehouse settings.
