Abstract

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia are facing tremendous pressure to improve their innovation performance. New knowledge is key to innovation. External knowledge especially important for SMEs as their internal knowledge is relatively limited compared to those of large organizations. As this study focuses on employees and their knowledge as important organizational resources for innovation in firms, the resource-based theory is chosen as the underlying theory for this study. Currently, SME innovation models focusing on a firm’s knowledge base seem limited. The objective of this study is to develop a framework capturing how external knowledge sources, namely market-oriented and scientific-oriented knowledge sources and contribute to building intellectual capital and innovative capability in SMEs. The main contribution of this study is the framework for innovative capability development in SMEs, which can be a guide for the relevant parties in devising strategies to drive innovation in SMEs.
