Abstract

Background - Due to industrialization and intensified competition, the sales of traditional crafts refacing challenges. One way to revive craft and craftsmanship is through tourism as shopping is an important and prevalent activity for tourists (Kim & Littrell, 2001; Snepenger, Murphy, O’Connell &Gregg, 2003; Lehto, Cai, O’Leary & Huan, 2004; Lin & Lin, 2006; Yüksel, 2007; Tsang, Tsai, &Leung,2011; Timothy, 2014). Tourist feel a trip is incomplete without purchasing souvenirs (Swanson & Horridge, 2006). However, on one hand, the mass-produced souvenirs in market place are not able to reflect a place-based value that connect to a place. On the other hand, how to transform crafts to a place-based souvenir yet to be fully explored. Purpose - The purpose of this study is to investigate the place-based craft souvenir for the sustainability of traditional craft. This study identifies the elements of place-based craft souvenir and explores the connections between souvenir and place. Perceived value, relationship quality and place meaning are used to study how souvenirs represent place. The purpose of the research, as the word itself indicates, is to provide the reader with a background to the study, and hence to smoothly lead into a description of the methods employed in the investigation. Design/methodology/approach - This study sits on interpretive paradigm. Place-based and S-O-R theory are used to develop the relationship between souvenirs and place meaning. In-depth interviews and observations were conducted in Jinan, China, a long history city with lots of traditional craft. Twenty documents were imported into ATLAS.ti software for analysis, which are include 14 in-depth interview transcripts, 4 newspapers, 1 document online and1video. Ninety concepts were emerged via open coding, then categorized under twenty-three sub-dimension in axial coding. Further, six dimensions (sensuous appreciation, craftsmanship, place linkage, cognitive, affective, place meaning) were concluded in selective coding. Lastly, these dimensions were categorized under three main themes: place-based craft souvenir, evaluation of souvenir, and place meaning to study the relationship between souvenir and place. Findings/Expected Contributions - From theoretical perspective, this study identified the elements of place-based craft souvenir. In addition, the relationship between souvenir and place has been further expanded by filling the gap on how tourists generate place meaning through souvenirs. And the relationship between perceived value, relationship quality (satisfaction and trust) and place meaning is extended from the cognitive and affective aspect. From practical perspective this study provides a guideline for craftsman to active the traditional craft by made place-based craft souvenir. Craftsmen may enhance place meaning by strengthen and improve their place-based craft souvenir from the dimensions of sensuous appreciation, craftsmanship and place linkage. When people cultivate their place meaning through souvenirs, it means that people equate the souvenir with the place, which indicate that the souvenir can tell its own story about the place. Research limitations - There are some limitations of this study. First, the age of the interviewees is mainly 25-40 years old, lacking the attitude of the interviewees in other age groups. Second, it is also possible to derive potential items from the study that would allow questionnaires to be constructed to obtain quantitative data, thus allowing empirical testing of souvenirs and a sense of place. Originality/value - This research filling the gap on how tourists generate place meaning through souvenirs. The dimensions of place-based craft souvenirs are identified to illustrate the process that souvenirs tell the story of place.
