Abstract

Background - Recent excessive growth in economy creates a serious concern towards environmental issues. A massive industrialization heighten the challenges for government regulatory, stakeholders, industries and society to look for an immediate rectification which emphasizes on climate changes and greenhouse gas emissions. In Malaysia, the usage of energy has increased over the past years and further create a warning sign that a precautionary measure need to be take soon if not the situation can give impact to environment and company sustainable performance. The implementation of Environmental Management System (EMS) in companies is important to increase environmental protection. In addition, stakeholders raised their concern about the pollution and environmental deterioration and urging industrialist to incorporate green innovation into all aspects of production. Purpose - The goal of this study is to fill a knowledge vacuum in the realm of EMS use in Malaysian manufacturing. More data will contribute in the development of a holistic model that ISO 14000-certified businesses can employ. Design/methodology/approach - The positivist research paradigm is used in this study. This study analyses how green innovation interacts with the linkages between EMS factors and organisational performance using theoretical views. This study will collect data from Malaysian manufacturing industries that are ISO 14000 EMS certified using a quantitative survey method. The study hypotheses will be tested using structural equation modelling (SEM). Findings/Expected Contributions - The research will help to enlighten the importance of embracing green innovation in industries to the policymakers and manufacturers which is lacking currently. This initiative is in line with Malaysia's 12th plan, which aims to promote EMS adoption in industry, boost GDP, and push the country above the high-income barrier. Research limitations - The mediating relationship between green innovation and EMS can be investigated further in service industries in the future studies. Originality/value - While there has been a significant amount of research done to investigate the link between EMS and organisational performance around the world, little is known about the mediating effect of green innovation, particularly in the Malaysian Manufacturing Industries context.
