Abstract

World Heritage Sites (WHSs) and World Heritage tourism is not a fresh topic in tourism management. WHSs are always welcome by government as it can grow the economy of country and present the world about the uniqueness of country. Malaysia is not excluded in this World Heritage Sites tourism as Melaka city and George Town (Penang) both nominated as WHS since 2008. However, the World Heritage Organization report stated the WHSs in Malaysia is currently facing over-tourism issue and it caused the local inhabitants moved out from the old town and the WHSs is full of boutique hotels, café, restaurants and tourists, without the local inhabitants’ culture and living patterns, the old town is losing their original colours. As there are study proved people have stronger sense of place will be more aggressive and will take action in preserve their place. However, there are no study about how to nurture local inhabitants to have sense of place. Purpose – The purpose of this research is to study enhancement on sense of place for sustainability of heritage tourism in George Town and Melaka. Sense of place (Cognitive, Behavioural and Actions taken) is not a fresh topic among heritage tourism however it mostly focusing in tourists from worldwide instead of local tourists. At the meanwhile, triggers in ambience, consumptive, tangible, olfactory and acoustic work well with sense of place. This research is going to study the relationships among triggers and sense of place then how these two elements could work together for nurture sense of place among local inhabitants.
