Abstract

This paper explores how mixed reality (MR) technology can enhance historical tourism by superimposing digital reconstructions of past events onto real heritage sites. We conduct a critical synthesis of recent literature and industry trends to identify the theoretical underpinnings and gaps in immersive tourism. Building on these insights, we develop a conceptual framework for MR integration into historical tourism, organised around four core pillars: design principles, user engagement, sustainability, and authenticity. The framework can be used by tourism operators, technology developers, and policymakers to enrich visitor experiences while preserving cultural heritage. We also highlight key ethical considerations (e.g., historical accuracy, cultural sensitivity, data privacy) related to MR and offer practical suggestions, a future research agenda, and idea for involving local stakeholders. The work offers a multi-layered perspective informed by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Experiential Learning Theory (ELT), and Place Attachment Theory. Overall, it contributes to immersive tourism research and practice by presenting a clear, actionable model for MR integration in historical tourism, laying the groundwork for empirical validation and real-world application.
