Abstract

Big Data has found ways to become a transformative tool in helping businesses make data driven decisions, that in turn increase operational efficiency and help a company gain a competitive advantage. Nevertheless, Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Malaysia are still facing some of the challenges when it comes to adoption of Big Data technologies as they are affected by the technological, organizational and environment factors. The main aim of this study is to analyze the potential impact of Big Data on MSMEs in Malaysia with focus on the main driving and hindering factors of the implementation of Big Data. The development of the research framework is based on the Technology Organization Environment (TOE) framework to determine key independent variables like compatibility, complexity, relative advantage, trialability, top management support, organizational readiness, competitive pressure, and government regulations. Data is collected from 25 MSME owners, managers and decision makers across various industries through a pilot approach. To discern the relationship between these independent variables and Big Data adoption, an analysis of multiple regression is carried out. The focus of this study is to analyze the impact that Big Data has influenced MSMEs to provide insights for business leaders, policymakers and providers of technology. This research contributes to growing literature in digital transformation of Malaysian MSMEs, which can help to establish its strategy for Big Data integration in this sector.
