As design education continues to grow, educators struggle to provide clear, structured interactions to large students while ensuring teamwork and creativity challenges simultaneously. During these processes, mentorship and collaboration are aided significantly through AI-enhancing instruction and brainstorming processes, which results in more cohesive outcomes. This paper investigates the utility of AI in addressing communication gaps instructors face in large design classrooms, the speed of students’ idea formulation, and grouping accuracy in collaborative work. AI implements new possibilities in authentic learning activities as per Jan Herrington’s work within constructivist learning approach. Herrington’s theory also focuses on dealing with problems in authentic contexts along with working in groups. AI tools allow lecturers to provide explanations with greater precision, thus enabling students to have a clear meaning of project objectives and expectations. This clears up any misconceptions and allows students to concentrate on effectively using design concepts. AI also greatly impacts work-based activities like brainstorming and collaboration. By offering varying concepts and suggestions for designs, as well as AI-guided feedback, students are able to accomplish more as a team, leading to more elaborate discussions and concepts. Teams can employ AI to view and analyze many perspectives to integrate them into design solutions, making them less disjointed. AI does not replace creativity; rather, it complements student’s creativity by enabling easier generation, refinement, and organization of ideas. The study was conducted in an Indonesian design course with 63 student participants through a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire with open-ended questions, and clarifies on ways in which AI can assist educators and students in large classes to scaffold new perspectives. Integrating AI into the classroom can enhance the quality of instruction and foster more effective design collaboration, enabling students to produce more sophisticated outcomes. The findings indicate that AI-enhanced collaboration supports students by stimulating creativity through unexpected ideas, improving clarity of instructions, and increasing confidence when working on group projects.
