Abstract

By uniting blockchain technology with the Internet of Things (IoT), one of the most concrete solutions is offered to secure data communication in smart transportation systems. In vehicular networks where huge amounts of real-time data are generated, blockchain technology provides decentralized, immutable, and transparent architecture maintaining the integrity, privacy, and trust of data exchanged. In this chapter, we will discuss a blockchain-aided IoT transportation framework, which would facilitate intelligent communication among vehicles, roadside units, and parking systems using edge computing and smart contracts. The chapter will introduce fundamentals of IoT and blockchain in view of their fused applications for addressing cyber vulnerabilities, enabling auditability in transactions, and enhancing operational efficiency. The chapter will also highlight how artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and IoT could collectively work in alleviating traffic congestion, enhancing road safety, and increasing sustainable urban mobility. The proposed framework is thereby cementing the validity of blockchain–IoT convergence for providing the secure, agile, and smart transport infrastructure that smart cities require.
