Abstract

Supervisory phubbing is a widespread workplace phenomenon that promotes negative individual and organizational outcomes. This study examined how supervisory phubbing reduces employees' work engagement. It also examines the buffering effect of self-leadership in supervisory phubbing and employee work engagement relationships in the healthcare sector in Punjab Province. This cross-sectional study included 384 medical officers, nurses, and paramedic staff working at a tertiary healthcare hospital. Data were collected from respondents using a survey questionnaire that measured supervisor phubbing (nine items), employee work engagement (nine items), and self-leadership (nine items). Data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) in SPSS and AMOS (Version 23). Surprisingly, the study's findings demonstrated a significant and positive effect of supervisory phubbing on employee work engagement, which was fostered by self-leadership. Our analysis also confirmed that self-leadership moderates the effect of supervisory phubbing on employee work engagement. The implications are presented based on the findings of this study.
