Abstract

As global warming and climate change continue to pose significant challenges, we are witnessing an increase in both natural and human-made disasters. This chapter looks into the urgent need for enhanced disaster monitoring and early warning systems, especially how the transformative role that artificial intelligence (AI) can play in this area. AI technologies are capable of analysing a wide range of complex data, such as social media posts, satellite images, sensors, etc. This chapter discusses the practical applications, including case studies of Ernst & Young (EY) Data Science Challenge, to illustrate the tangible impact of AI on disaster management. Furthermore, we also discuss the ethical and practical issues surrounding AI deployment, such as concerns about data privacy, algorithmic bias and fair access to technology. By examining these aspects, the chapter emphasises AI’s potential to tackle disasters in a proactive manner.
