This paper presents findings 3from an ethnographic study investigating the implementation of a put-to-light (PTL) system within Micro Fulfillment Centers (MFC) to enhance last-mile delivery in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry. Grounded in immersive fieldwork at the warehousing and distribution departments of India’s largest FMCG manufacturer, the study identifies effective strategies for optimizing last-mile logistics by addressing organizational challenges. The novelty of this research lies in its detailed ethnographic approach, providing unique insights into the practical implications of PTL systems and MFC operations. By closely examining day-to-day practices through field observations and informal interviews, the study uncovers opportunities for redefining lean supply chain dynamics, reducing lead times, and enhancing customer satisfaction. The research proposes a restructured supply network tailored to the specific needs and pain points of MFC operations. Despite the intricate nature of FMCG logistics, the study highlights the significant advantages of technologies such as IoT, AI, digitization, and ERP systems. When integrated with PTL systems and leaner supply chain practices, improvements contribute to enhanced efficiency, reduced wastage, and improved environmental sustainability in the FMCG sector, with potential application to similar environments, including food-product logistics, which require shorter storage and distribution cycle time.
