Abstract
This study aims to improve the lawn mowing quality by develop a smart lawnmower through literature reviews. The smart lawnmower intends to solve mainly the limitations of existing smart lawnmowers and the research gaps in literature review. The main purpose of this study is to benefit society by advancing innovation and improving quality of life. Furthermore, an innovative problem solving methodology and a systematic design process are introduced in this study for a better approach of the identified problems which could also become a good reference for future research in different field. The problem solving methodology utilised in this study namely TRIZ. It is applied with its four major analysis tools: Cause and Effect Chain Analysis, Engineering Contradiction, Physical Contradiction and Substance-Field Analysis. First, cause and effect chain are formed for each problem to find the root causes to a problem. The contraction of a problem is identified in Engineering and Physical Contradiction where these two sub-tools will lead the problem to a few inventive principles and the inventive solutions are able to be explored from the inventive principles through brainstorming or directional research. However, Substance-Field Modelling is a stand alone tool that solve a problem by forming a Su-field model. Next, the system will be categorised based on whether the system is a harmful, an insufficient or an excessive system. Finally, one or more inventive solutions can be identified from a clear presentation of the problems in a Su-field model. After a detailed conceptualisation process, Autodesk Inventor is used for the finalised design drawing and stress simulation. The prototype is fabricated and tested through experiments for usability validation which included tests on moving ability on uneven terrain, battery power durability and cutting ability. Using Minitab-19, the experiments data are analysed with two-sample t-tests. Last but not least, a thorough cost analysis are included as well for price comparison with existing products. This study does not cover other aspects of smart lawnmower designs such as the cutting blade, micro-controller, and movement algorithm for the robot and these also known as the limitation of this study and can be improved in the future study.
