Abstract

The rising penetration rate of smartphone enabled the consumers to switch from conventional offline food ordering to online food delivery, which appeals to the masses due to the simple process of food selection and easy payment methods using e-wallet. E-wallet is also use for on-site transactions with merchants. Therefore, street food hawker must adopt e-wallet payment in their daily business to meet the digital payment preference by urban customers especially. During the widespread pandemic, street food hawkers are vulnerable to risks of unemployment and business wind down, especially during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period. This severely affects hawkers' income and well-being. This is especially true if hawkers solely depend on traditional offline ordering from physical stalls. With the emergence of online food delivery and e-wallet payment usage, more and more urban consumers change their ordering style, thus changing the nature of the hawker food industry. This indeed brings to potential growth in business and business sustainability as street food hawkers can still cook and sell their authentic food without losing any business. However, due to socioeconomic factors, literature indicated that microenterprises such as hawkers tend to no use of any technology in helping them to be resilient during the pandemic outbreak. This research proposes that online food delivery mediates the relationship between intention to use and actual use of e-wallet payment. E-wallet payment will eventually enhance their well-being, thereby increasing their life satisfaction, happiness, and better income. Purpose – The purpose of this study is first to examine the factors that influence the e-wallet payment by street food hawkers. Secondly, this study will examine whether online food delivery mediates the relationship between intention to use and actual e-wallet payment. The final objective is to further investigate whether e-wallet use brings impact to their well-being.
