Abstract

A dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) and multilayer substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) based filter-antenna subsystem is proposed in this paper. In the proposed design, the SIW structure performs the filtering functions while the DRA acts as a resonator. The proposed subsystem is able to enhance the bandwidth as well as filtering out the harmonic resonances. The bandwidth of the subsystem can be intelligently controlled by adjusting the coupling between the resonators. The harmonic resonances are controlled by adjusting the higher order frequency modes in the SIW filter. In addition, the transmission zeros (TZs) can be controlled by adjusting certain correlated parameters. The proposed subsystem has a center frequency of 5.4 GHz with 10 dB bandwidth of 620 MHz (3.44 times wider than the conventional DRA), flat broadside gain (7.1 dBi), high selectivity and harmonic suppression of 2.7 with a rejection level higher than −5 dB. A reasonable match is observed between the results of the simulated EM model, and fabricated prototype.
