Lightning is a natural phenomenon which can be fatal to humans and cause destruction of services and properties. The impact is more pronounced in countries with high lightning flash density such as Malaysia. To mitigate such impact, lightning protection system should be appropriately designed. A lightning protection system is designed based on the risk level computed in the lightning risk assessment exercise. In most countries, the IEC 62305-2 serves as the reference standard to perform lightning risk assessment. However, national deviation is a common occurrence which is also driven by the nature of the application of lightning risk assessment. Such deviation is yet to be made available in the literature. Hence, in this paper, a review of the conduct of lightning risk assessment in various applications will be presented. The applications include risk assessment for small structures, oil tanks, renewable energy, and power systems. Several innovations to simplify the lightning risk assessment practice will also be critiqued. Then, the national adoption of lightning protection standards in several countries will be reviewed with IEC 62305 as the benchmark standard. Finally, a case study of how Malaysia, a country severely affected by lightning strikes, has nationalized the lightning protection standards will be discoursed. In general, many countries acknowledge the need to conduct a systematic lightning risk assessment to ensure a safe lightning protection system is in place to safeguard life and economic values of properties. Innovations to enhance the efficiency of conducting lightning risk assessment are also continually proposed by researchers globally.
