Abstract

Malaysia has been recognized as one of the twelve nations endowed with rich biodiversity. Such huge number of species in the rain forest and sea are an important asset that needs to be properly documented. Responding to these important needs, this research is focused towards developing content-based image retrieval (CBIR) for Marine Life Images in Malaysia. This is a challenging task since the images are taken from different viewpoints, blur images and the fact that marine species do not possess consistent colour, shape and texture appearance. There are two main objectives of this study. The first objective is to investigate useful image descriptors for marine species and propose enhancement to improve the accuracy. The second objective is to develop an efficient content-based image retrieval system for marine life images.
