Abstract

Personal health records are a valuable asset for all people to monitor and maintain their health. Such records ideally should be available when and where they are needed - i.e. they should be ubiquitous - so they should be available with a minimum of infrastructure requirements. One solution would include mobile or portable health records, specifically ones available on the mobile phones which many or most people carry with them, which are backed up on Web-based servers, which make the records privately available to the respective patients throughout the Web. This research project has developed a communication module that enables a ubiquitous Personal Health Record (PHR) system by allowing standards-compliant medical data exchange between a Portable Personal Health Record (PPHR) and a Web Based Personal Health Record (WWW-PHR). The module addresses the issue of interoperability between different medical entities by translating user’s input to the Continuity of Care Record (CCR) standard (ASTM E2369-05), also invoking several standards for vocabulary such as LOINC and SNOMED.
