Abstract

Rate Saturation (RS) is a dynamic nonlinearity which is present in many control systems. The RS limits restrict the rate of change of the output signal per unit of time. Studies over time have shown that RS nonlinearity reduces performance and affects stability in control systems. Instances which have been associated with RS include accidents involving the Saab JAS 39 Gripen and the USAF YF-22 aircrafts. RS is also a known problem in steam boilers, active magnetic bearing actuators, thermal generating units and earthquake shake table systems. A common method for modelling nonlinear systems is through the use of block-oriented models. Existing estimation methods for the standalone RS do not readily extend to larger block-oriented models where the RS nonlinearity forms a subcomponent. Although there are many studies in the literature on the identification of block-oriented models, most of them are focused on models with static nonlinearities. This research fills the gap in the literature on the identification of block-oriented models with dynamic nonlinearity, and it deals specifically with the RS nonlinearity. The standalone RS is first considered. Through the application of the best linear approximation (BLA) and Bussgang’s theorem, the RS limit s of the system are estimated.
