Abstract
The IEEE802.16 broadband wireless access (BWA) standard was designed from the ground up with security features built-in to circumvent security issues found in the IEEE802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) system. The purpose of this research is to study the architecture of the IEEE802.16 standard used in the Worldwide Interoperatability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) system and examine the security vulnerabilities inherent from the WLAN standard. These vulnerabilities are found mainly in the Privacy and Key Management (PKM) authentication protocol, unprotected network entry frames and also unencrypted management communication messages.
