Abstract

This study aims to identify the factors for successful online collaborative learning (OCL) based on the experiences gained by Malaysian secondary school students. Findings highlighted the characteristics of two input factors and one process factor which were in line with the Online Interactive Learning model as proposed by Benbunan-Fich et al (2005). The factors are individual, group and learning processes which include the collaborative task and process guides. Findings indicate that individual motivation is the most prominent characteristic for success. Other contributing characteristics are the setting of goals in terms of learning contents and quality of group work, as well as eliciting group members' commitment in the learning project. These characteristics are proposed as the guidelines to enhance collaborative learning.
