Abstract

With the shift from the industrial society to the information society, information became one of the key economic resources and a main factor defining the social structure, which affects the forms of economic activity, types of companies and organisations, and social interaction. A general need arising out of this paradigm shift was the need not only for information in the traditional print format, but for information presented in digital or electronic format along with the need for different ways of creating, storing, providing and using the information. Studies have proven that it is generally accepted that the most efficient way to organise the information and library service for a number of disciplines today is through the creation and use of digital libraries, not only as collections of electronic documents (both digitised and digitally born), but as a unified system of creation, storage and organisation of diverse information with the purpose of search, retrieval, and access via global networks. According to Sharma and Vishwanathan (2001), digital libraries are here to stay and the conversion of traditional to digital is inevitable. This study defined the concept of digital libraries then did an interface-based evaluation of five digital library projects in Malaysia based on a criteria developed from the body of existing literature.
