Abstract

A 32-element 8-port dual-band multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is proposed for 5 G indoor basestation applications, covering the sub-6 GHz band (3.07–6.50 GHz) and the mmWave band (20.78–29.00 GHz). A systematic design approach is employed to achieve wide dual-band operation while improving impedance matching and radiation performance. To enhance the realized gain, a parasitic reflector is incorporated into the ground plane, resulting in a peak realized gain of 8.2 dBi and 9.7 dBi in the sub-6 GHz and mmWave bands, respectively. The proposed antenna achieves a radiation efficiency ranging from 80% to 97% across the operating bands, while maintaining good impedance matching and port isolation. Furthermore, key MIMO performance metrics, including the envelope correlation coefficient (ECC), diversity gain (DG), total active reflection coefficient (TARC), channel capacity loss (CCL), and mean effective gain (MEG), confirm good diversity performance and low mutual correlation among the antenna elements. The proposed antenna provides an effective combination of dual-band operation, enhanced realized gain, high radiation efficiency, and excellent MIMO characteristics, making it a promising applicant for next-generation 5 G indoor base-station systems requiring wide coverage and high-data-rate wireless communications.
