Abstract

Copyright grants creators exclusive rights, comprising moral and economic rights. Economic rights are transferable, whereas moral rights are permanent. Although copyright protection applies automatically upon creation, registration is recommended to establish proof of ownership. In the digital era, e-books have become a popular alternative to printed books, offering enhanced accessibility and portability. However, technological advancements also pose challenges, such as e-book piracy, which frequently occurs through online platforms. This piracy significantly harms authors and publishers financially, jeopardizes the sustainability of the publishing industry. Addressing these challenges requires strengthened law enforcement and collaborative efforts to protect copyright and foster innovation in the e-book industry. This research finds that: First, Indonesia’s Copyright Law (Copyright Law 2014) protects e-books, despite not explicitly addressing digital formats. Licensing agreements serve as an effective legal tool to safeguard e-book copyrights. Second, copyright infringement has become increasingly prevalent in the digital era, necessitating more robust and coordinated law enforcement. Enhanced public awareness, policies aligned with technological advancements, and continuous education are essential to create a fair ecosystem for creators. Thus, creators can continue to innovate without the threat of piracy.
