Abstract
Control charts are powerful tools for assisting engineering practitioners in process monitoring. During their implementation, performance measures that can accurately represent the chart’s actual performance is essential. One of the performance measures that is frequently used is the average run length (ARL). However, it is only accurate for a symmetrical run length distribution, and leads to misleading results when it is skewed. The run sum chart has so far been assessed solely based on its ARL, without any studies on its run length distribution. To address this gap, this paper examines the complete run length distribution of the chart. From the numerical findings in this paper, it was observed that the in-control median run length and out-of-control median run length for small shift sizes is smaller than its corresponding ARL, indicating a skewed run length. The numerical analysis conducted in this paper also reveals that 60% to 70% of the actual run lengths are shorter than its ARL, demonstrating that the ARL should not be used as the sole performance measure. This paper also studies the entire run length distribution, allowing practitioners to identify the range and uncertainties in the possible run length values. The study demonstrates that performance evaluations should be accompanied with its run length distribution and not based on the ARL alone. This ensures practitioners avoid misleading conclusions regarding false alarms and the detection of small and moderate shifts
