Abstract

Public transport is essential for daily mobility, serving purposes such as commuting, travel, and daily activities. In Malaysia, the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system is widely used, including visually impaired individuals. However, certain LRT platforms lack physical barriers such as platform screen doors. This poses a significant safety risk to visually impaired passengers who may accidentally step beyond the platform edge despite tactile paving. To address this issue, this paper proposes a Smart Shoe system designed to enhance safety in LRT stations using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The system adopts an infrastructure-assisted RFID architecture in which a station-mounted RFID reader defines a predefined danger zone, while the user carries a passive RFID tag integrated into the Smart Shoe. Upon detection, a wireless signal is transmitted to trigger real-time haptic vibration and auditory alerts. Experimental results demonstrate reliable detection performance within 2.5 meters of the platform edge, with minimal alert latency. The proposed system provides a lightweight, low-cost, and computationally efficient solution to improve safety and support mobility for visually impaired commuters in public transit environments.
