Abstract
This paper presents the Cubature Kalman Optimizer (CKO) as a novel approach for tuning the proportional–integral– derivative (PID) controller parameters in an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system. The proposed method employs the Cubature Transformation Technique (CTT) to perform a multipoint search within a dynamically controlled local neighborhood. In each trial, the neighborhood radius is kept constant throughout all iterations but systematically varied between trials, enabling the algorithm to balance exploration and exploitation effectively. By generating multiple candidate solutions through cubature propagation, CKO achieves rapid and precise convergence toward optimal PID parameters. The performance of the proposed PIDCKO controller is validated through time-domain simulations, demonstrating superior transient response, faster settling time, and improved robustness compared with PID controllers tuned using Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA), Biogeography-Based Optimization (BBO), Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), Differential Evolution (DE), and the classical Ziegler–Nichols (ZN) method.
