Abstract
Efficient waste management is a critical component of sustainable urban development, necessitating the integration of smart technologies to optimize resource utilization and hygiene. This study presents the design and implementation of an automated Smart Dustbin system, leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technology to enhance operational efficiency. The system autonomously detects human presence, triggering an automated lid mechanism while providing real-time waste level monitoring and notifications. Key hardware components include ultrasonic sensors, an MG996R servo motor, Arduino UNO R3, and a Wi-Fi module, which collectively facilitate proximity sensing, waste level detection, and remote data transmission. The system architecture encompasses hardware-software integration, utilizing the Blynk platform for remote monitoring and control via a mobile application. The development process involved iterative testing, beginning with simulations using the Wokwi simulator, followed by real-world validation to ensure accuracy and reliability. Experimental results confirm the system's capability to effectively automate lid operations and provide accurate waste level notifications via an LCD display and mobile interface. Challenges encountered, such as sensor calibration and Wi-Fi connectivity issues, were systematically resolved to enhance performance. Future advancements may include the integration of AI-driven waste classification for intelligent sorting, further augmenting its contribution to sustainable waste management. This study underscores the potential of IoT-enabled solutions in revolutionizing waste disposal practices, promoting environmental sustainability, and fostering smart city initiatives.
