Abstract
The integration of RFID systems with metallic environments remains a significant challenge due to impedance mismatch and field distortion effects that degrade antenna performance. Conventional dipole antennas show a decrease in efficiency and gain when placed near metal surfaces. To address this problem, this study investigates the design of co-current bifilar helical antennas specifically optimized for near-metal RFID applications. The bifilar configuration, using co-current excitation, improves the magnetic near-field strength while simultaneously stabilizing the input impedance to achieve a predominantly real value with minimal reactance. Full-wave electromagnetic simulations in FEKO are used to evaluate the bifilar helical antenna’s performance at variable distances from metallic plates, demonstrating substantial improvements in gain, magnetic field distribution, and impedance stability compared to conventional single helices. The proposed design indicates a 1.28 dBi gain, over the 0.6 dBi achieved by single helical counterparts. This study highlights the significance of using bifilar structures to alleviate the unfavorable effects of metal proximity, making the antenna highly suitable for robust, reliable RFID operation in metal-rich environments. The results are expected to provide more efficient industrial tracking, logistics, and asset management systems where metallic interference is inevitable
