Abstract
The development of implantable antennas has gained immense popularity over the decades. They are employed in multiple biological in-body applications and are still being explored for technological advancements and improvements. A literature review was done to study and address the trade-offs of free-space and implantable meandered antenna designs caused by their smaller physical footprint. This investigation additionally examines the history, current, and recent advances in implantable antenna technology. In this paper, two meandered antenna designs for implantable arm muscle applications were designed: Design A (9.733 mm × 10.80 mm) and Design A (9.85 mm × 5.30 mm). Both antennas' resonant frequency and impedance matching were fine-tuned to around 405 MHz, operating within the Medical Implant Communication Service (MICS) band (402 - 405 MHz). The two proposed antennas were designed and simulated in a (180 mm x 100 mm x 50 mm) muscle model using the Altair FEKO 3 simulation software. Design A covered a gain of -45 dBi. Design B covered a gain of -35 dBi. The designs were compared and evaluated based on their surface current distribution, antenna resonance, three-dimensional radiation pattern, and more. Theoretical calculations and simulation methods were used to show how Design A and Design B agree with different performance metrics, ultimately proving Design B to have the most outstanding results. It was proven that the trade-off of miniaturization on this design had a less drastic impact on the balance between performance characteristics like impedance matching and antenna gain compared to existing literature.
