Abstract

This study investigates the performance of a hybrid transmission system combining a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and a conventional gearbox in an Electric Vehicle (EV). With increasing emphasis on energy efficiency and dynamic driving capabilities, CVT systems offer seamless gear transitions and optimized power delivery. The research involves the design, modeling, and testing of a CVT integrated with a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) powertrain. Detailed CAD designs of the CVT pulleys, torque calculations, and mechanical resistance analyses including air drag, rolling resistance, and gradient resistance are conducted. Experimental results demonstrate improved acceleration and smoother power transitions, though trade-offs in mechanical losses and cost exist. This paper provides a technical basis for the feasibility and future development of CVT applications in EVs.
