Abstract

ireless communication networks are evolving to accommodate the growing data traffic needs driven by the proliferation of connected devices. While 5G networks offer faster speeds, reduced latency, and greater capacity, challenges related to coverage and energy efficiency persist. Technologies such as relay communications offer promising solutions for extending coverage and improving network performance. Notably, this technology is included in 3GPP Release-18 as sidelink relaying, with further enhancements planned for Release-19. In this paper, a qualitative comparative study is carried out on relaying communications. We will first explore the deployment scenarios of relaying communications, followed by a systematic classification of the various relaying mechanisms, architectures, and transmission modes. The paper concludes with potential future research directions
