Abstract

The fast uptake of mobile financial technology has played a significant role in making e-wallets a critical component of digital transformation in Malaysia. This study approaches the significant predictors of continued use of e-wallet for university students and its effects on the adoption of e-wallet technology in the context of Malaysia, a digitally active segment of society that is influential to the development of a cashless campus. Based on perceived ease of use, perceived security and privacy, promotion benefit, and social influence, the research utilised a quantitative method of analysis with survey data collected for 200 university students in southern Malaysia. Relationships between the variables were analysed by structural equation modelling and Importance-Performance Matrix Analysis (IPMA). The findings imply that perceived privacy and security and promotion benefits are more important than perceived ease of use or social influence to retain e-wallet usage among students. The findings have practical implications for providers of e-wallets and university decision makers to build a secure application and to provide incentives that are incentivizing. It also adds to the mobile commerce research literature as it directs attention from the adoption to continued use of m-services in a higher education setting.
