Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of fixed wireless access (FWA) technology as a practical solution to enhance internet connectivity in rural Malaysia, where geographical challenges hinder traditional fiber optic deployment. By focusing on the uplink performance of outdoor FWA installations, the research evaluates the potential of this approach to address connectivity gaps in underserved areas. Field trial results reveal substantial improvements in upload speeds with outdoor FWA, demonstrating uplink throughput gains from as low as 1 Mbps to as high as 30 Mbps. Comparative analysis between indoor and outdoor setups highlights the performance advantages of outdoor FWA in overcoming signal barriers typical in rural environments. The study further discusses the applications that benefit from enhanced uplink capacity, including online education, local commerce, and telemedicine, underscoring FWA’s role in bridging the digital divide in rural communities.
