Globally, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs) have faced numerous obstacles to growth and sustainability. SMEs are known as one of the pillars of a country’s growth and prosperity in terms of their contribution towards the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employment opportunities. Despite the research on this area, many businesses under this context tend to wrap up their business within five years, and the percentage of business closures is alarming. The core aim of this research is to examine the affinity of Entrepreneurial Orientation and Open innovation in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) performance alongside introducing the Cost leadership business strategy as a mediator. This research will contribute to current works of literature towards modelling Entrepreneurial Orientation linkage to Firm Performance. This study will dwell on the contingency theory that suggests possible fits among variables internally and externally, which is critical in obtaining the optimum firm performance. This research will use a quantitative approach whereby a survey questionnaire will be used to gauge the respondents' (business owners') agreements towards statements relating to variables of interest. 283 firms have been sampled in this cross-sectional study. The direct relationship reveals that Proactiveness, Competitive aggressiveness, Autonomy and Cost leadership have significant relationships with firm performance, while Risk-taking, Competitive aggressiveness and open innovation have significant relationships with cost leadership. Meanwhile, mediation testing reveals that open innovation, risk-taking, and competitive aggressiveness significantly affect firm performance. The findings of this research extend the body of knowledge related to Entrepreneurial orientation, open innovation, and cost leadership configuration towards firm performance.
