Abstract

A current problem in Identity Management (IDM) system is that the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) based identity verification (i.e., certificate, biometric, smart card, etc.) requires the stakeholders to give more information than the system really need and is handled by a trusted central party on behalf of the stakeholders. The centralization of IDM is cumbersome, complex, and ultimately leads to the risk of privacy violation and identity theft. Hence, it is vital to safeguard stakeholders’ privacy to build trust and reputation towards service providers. The aim of this research is to identify the vulnerability of PKI-based IDM and propose the adoption of the decentralization and two-way authentication concepts for the formulation of a blockchain-based mutual authentication model. QR code had been integrated to conceal agreeable Personal Identifiable Information (PII) generated secret key to be shared during mutual authentication where the blockchain can be immutable reference point for validation. A prototype was developed to demonstrate how the QR code is utilised for authentication with the blockchain as the backbone of the authentication. This approach provides a decentralized IDM to overcome the risk of centralized IDM. The prototype was also tested and validated against the data privacy threat models. The experimental results show that the model was able to perform stable and reliable authentication with 99.97% accuracy in average time of 11 seconds.
