Abstract

This paper presents a review focusing on the evolution of sedan rear spoilers. Despite the abundant insights and findings in the existing literature, the review uncovers a significant lack of standardization and comparative consistency among studies. The presence of variations in factors such as automobile models, spoiler designs, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) parameters, active controls, and building materials has hindered the broad applicability of research findings. Nevertheless, the collective body of diverse studies has provided a substantial understanding of the dynamics of spoiler performance, underscoring the influential role of spoiler characteristics on vehicle aerodynamics. This paper identifies noteworthy research deficits and advocates for a more systematic, collaborative, and standardized approach within this field. To address these gaps, the adoption of standardized testing protocols, comprehensive comparisons of spoiler air foil car model combinations, enhanced industry-academic collaboration, and further investigation of material science concerning spoiler construction are suggested as key areas of emphasis. This review offers crucial guidance for future research endeavours aimed at enhancing the design, efficiency, and functionality of spoilers, holding the potential for far-reaching implications in the realms of vehicle aerodynamics, energy efficiency, and overall automotive performance.
