Abstract
The objective of documentaries is to report issues and record truth based on physical, observable, material evidence from the external reality. The three founders of the documentary genre define truth as concerning the external reality: Grierson’s documentaries focus on social problems in society; Flaherty depicts how humans overcome the challenges in his natural environment; Dziga Vertov advocates truth through the camera as the mechanical eye, to capture life objectively. Other movements like direct cinema and cinema verite prefer to use the fly-onthe-wall technique to observe day-to-day life (Aufderheide 2007), with longer takes and less cuts that allude to a factual documentation of the outside world.
