Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the determinants of risk preference behaviour in Malaysian retirement planning. It examines the influence of the adoption of financial technology, familiarity bias, self-attribution bias and mental health on the risk preference behaviour among Malaysians. A moderator which is mental health is examined and tested on the aforementioned relationship. This research addresses Prospect Theory as a foundation and an underpinning theory. Besides, the Valence Theory and Tripartite Theory of Anxiety and Depression are addressed as supporting theories in this research. Prior conceptual and empirical research was referred to and discussed. A quantitative research method is employed in this research, where the unit of analysis is the Malaysian adults who are aged 18 and above and who own at least one private online bank account in W.P. Putrajaya, W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Pulau Pinang, and Melaka. 385 respondents are selected to collect the primary data through self-administered survey questionnaires. Moreover, the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) software and Smart-Partial Least Square (SmartPLS) are utilised for analysis and data interpretation purposes. The findings indicate that Malaysian risk preference behaviour while planning for retirement is affected by familiarity bias, self-attribution bias, the adoption of financial technology, and mental health. There is a significant negative moderation effect of mental health on selfattribution bias and risk preference behaviour in Malaysian retirement planning. This research concur that familiarity bias is the most influential factor that predicts the risk preference behaviour among Malaysian.
