Wee, Jia Foong (2022) Locative media for alleviating our sense of lost: A Reconstruction of Puncak Purnama. Masters thesis, Multimedia University. Full text not available from this repository.Abstract
Urged by recent sightings of neglected and demolished local art forms, it is in the core interest of this research to suggest the potential for locative media to alleviate our sense of loss in history. This research hopes to address this by reenacting demolished sculptures, specifically Puncak Purnama back on site with the aid of locative media. This research retraces the origins of locative from its technological roots as an information system, to its formation as a cultural practice. Following that, this research highlights the cultural tensions and impediments derived from traditional aesthetic ontologies, demonstrating their limitations to reconcile complex relations that emerge through relational spaces that are composed of material and digital. In accordance, this study suggests an alternate ontological reading and aesthetic interpretation for locative media informed by phenomenological thought and embodiment. This is accomplished by considering locative media’s potential to inscribe and access information in space. By examining locative media’s capability to be site-specificity, this research advocates for locative media’s potential to be utilized for site-specific storytelling and re-enacting history. This is further accompanied by a practical investigation through the reconstruction of a demolished site-specific sculpture as a case study. The sculpture will be re-enacted on-site by developing a prototype application integrating GPS and Augmented Reality.
